Music of the Elizabethan Era

The music of the Elizabethan Era was a very important aspect in Shakespeare's time. Music enhanced the atmosphere of the theatre and was a common sound in the courtyards and churches. (Please see links to the right)

There were 5 different types of music in this period: Elizabethan Church music, Court music, Street music, Town music and Theatre music. 


Popular instruments in this time period include: the lute, fiddle, pipe, flute, organ and the harp.


Famous Composers of this time are: John Dowland, William Byrd, Thomas Campion, John Farmer, Orlando Gibbons, Robert Johnson and Thomas Tallis.
