Music of the Elizabethan Era

The music of the Elizabethan Era was a very important aspect in Shakespeare's time. Music enhanced the atmosphere of the theatre and was a common sound in the courtyards and churches. (Please see links to the right)

There were 5 different types of music in this period: Elizabethan Church music, Court music, Street music, Town music and Theatre music. 


Popular instruments in this time period include: the lute, fiddle, pipe, flute, organ and the harp.


Famous Composers of this time are: John Dowland, William Byrd, Thomas Campion, John Farmer, Orlando Gibbons, Robert Johnson and Thomas Tallis.

  5. This is way to short. I wish there more information on each type of music. Not just short sentences. I also wanted examples of what each type of music. I also don't know a lot of the examples instruments maybe put in pictures of each.

  6. Your information is really good, but we were wondering which specific instruments and composers Shakespeare would have used for the music for his plays? If he incorporated any music full of spite and anger, we warrant that we would attend.

  9. I thought that although your information was correct and well organized I would of enjoyed more information regarding the types of music and the reasons they were so popular. I did enjoy that you added visuals to help display music in a Elizabethan era.
